MILLBURY, MASSACHUSETTS, December 3, 2007 For the third consecutive year, Millbury Savings Bank has donated $2,500 to help defray transportation costs for the local Meals on Wheels program.
“Meals on Wheels is vital to ensuring our senior population receives nutritious, prepared meals each day,” said William J. Walsh, Millbury Savings Bank’s president and chief executive officer. “We are happy to support the program and its volunteers.”
Meals on Wheels is a federally sponsored program, administered locally, that delivers well-balanced, lunchtime meals to homebound individuals age 60 and older. While federal funding covers the cost of the meals, transportation subsidies must be raised at the local level. Last year, a pool of 15 to 20 volunteer drivers, working five days per week year-round, delivered more than 15,750 meals to homebound Millbury seniors, and they are on pace to meet or exceed that level in 2007. In Millbury, services are coordinated by the Council on Aging and its director, Judith O’Connor.
“Volunteers are the lifeline to our seniors, not only in delivering hot meals but in checking on the well-being of the people they visit,” said O’Connor. “Thanks to Millbury Savings Bank and their financial support, these services can continue, uninterrupted.”
