Millbury Savings Bank supports Meals on Wheels
MILLBURY, MASSACHUSETTS, October 26, 2009Millbury Savings Bank recently donated $3,000 to help defray transportation costs for the local Meals on Wheels, a program that relies on volunteers to deliver nearly 17,000 lunches a year to homebound seniors.
“Meals on Wheels is critical to ensuring that area seniors get a nutritious, prepared meal each day,” said William J. Walsh, Millbury Savings Bank’s president and chief executive officer. “We are happy to support this important program and its volunteers.”
Meals on Wheels is a federally sponsored program, administered locally by the Council on Aging, that delivers well-balanced, lunchtime meals to homebound individuals age 60 and older. In Millbury, a pool of 15 volunteer drivers works five days a week year-round to deliver up to 75 meals per day to homebound seniors. While federal funding covers the cost of the food, transportation subsidies must be raised at the local level. This is the fifth consecutive year that Millbury Savings Bank has been the program’s primary private contributor.
“Many times, our volunteer driver is the only person a homebound senior sees during the day, so delivering the meal allows us to check in on their well-being, too” said Council on Aging Director Judith O’Connor. “We’re thankful that, with this support from Millbury Savings, these services can continue.”
