Important information for cardholders about fraud prevention tools.

In recent years, ATM, debit, and credit card fraud have been on a dramatic rise. News reports are filled with reports of massive data breaches at major retailers, card processors, social media networks, and more.

New tools help prevent fraud

To help fight this increasing threat and keep your accounts safe, we want to let you know about new tools Millbury Savings Bank has put in place. We’ve introduced a fraud prevention solution that monitors each and every Millbury Savings Bank ATM and debit card transaction and, using a sophisticated set of criteria and algorithms, scores each transaction on its likelihood of fraud. These criteria include:

  • Transactions with merchants that are considered high risk or suspicious.
  • Sudden changes in the geographic location where transactions originate.
  • A sudden string of high dollar transactions taking place in a short period of time.
  • A pattern of spending that is different from what you’ve exhibited in the past.
  • Any pattern of spending associated with new fraud trends around the world.

For transactions with a higher likelihood of fraud, you may be called to verify the transactions or they may be delayed or declined, depending on the severity of the risk. In this way, we can help prevent fraud before it happens and before you become a victim.

You may be called

If we suspect fraudulent ATM or debit card use, our monitoring agency will place an automated call to you to validate the legitimacy of the suspect transactions. Your participation in this call is critical to prevent potential fraud and avoid restrictions we may place on your debit card.

  • An automated system, identifying itself as the Millbury Savings Bank Fraud Detection Center, will attempt to reach you at each of the phone number(s) we have on file for you. (If you are unavailable, the automated system will leave a message, including a 6-digit personal message code and a toll-free number, so that you may return the call.)
  • You will be asked to enter your 5-digit mailing ZIP code on your touchtone keypad in order to verify your identity. (If you are transferred to a live agent, you may also be asked to provide your name as it appears on your card and the last four digits of your Social Security number.) NOTE: You will never be asked for your full card number, PIN, or bank account number.
  • You will be prompted to verify recent transaction(s) for their legitimacy. If the transactions are confirmed to be fraudulent, you will be transferred to a live call center representative, who will cancel your card and refer you to us to order a new card.

Our goal, quite simply, is to minimize your risk of fraud and the impact it can have on your bank accounts. For this reason, it is extremely important that we have your most up-to-date mailing address as well as home, work, and/or cell phone numbers so that we can contact you and verify your transactions in a timely manner. If you have changed addresses or phone numbers recently, or would like to add an alternate phone number, please contact us.

Remember:  Millbury Savings Bank and our Fraud Detection Center representatives will NEVER ask for full card or account numbers, PINs, or passwords via phone, text, or email.  If you have any questions about your card, our fraud prevention tools, or any of your recent transactions, please contact us in Millbury at (508) 865-5811 or in Worcester at (508) 757-0057.
