Millbury Savings gives $3,500 to Meals on Wheels.

Millbury Savings Bank has donated $3,500 to cover transportation costs for the local Meals on Wheels, a program that relies on volunteers to deliver more than 18,000 meals a year to homebound seniors.

“This program ensures residents get at least one well-balanced meal each and every day,” said Robert J. Morton, Millbury Savings Bank’s president and chief executive officer. “We’re pleased to support the volunteers who are so vital to keeping this program going.”

Meals on Wheels is a federally sponsored program, administered locally by the Council on Aging, that delivers nutritious, prepared meals to homebound individuals age 60 and older. In Millbury, a pool of volunteer drivers works five days a week, year-round, to deliver up to 80 meals per day. While federal funding covers the cost of the food, transportation subsidies must be raised locally. This is the 11th consecutive year that Millbury Savings has been the program’s primary private contributor.

“Not only are our drivers delivering meals, but they’re checking on the well-being of our homebound residents, too,” said Council on Aging Director Judith O’Connor. “This funding from Millbury Savings is critical to supporting our volunteers in this important work.”
