Few things make your taste buds happier than biting into the first crisp, juicy apple of the fall season. But invariably, half-way through the giant bag you picked at the local orchard, you find yourself with too many apples and too few ideas on what to do with them. Courtesy of Betty Crocker, here are 16 ways to use up those leftover apples.
Apple Crisp. It’s a classic for a reason—a simple dessert that takes mere minutes to make, but that everyone wants to gobble up. Try this simple recipe for the crumble: 3/4 cup packed brown sugar, 1/2 cup all-purpose flour, 1/2 cup quick-cooking or old-fashioned oats, 1/3 cup softened butter or margarine, and 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon. Bake at 375°F for 30 minutes. And don’t forget the vanilla ice cream!
Pancakes. Liven up your morning pancakes by adding grated apples to the batter. Cook them as you normally do, or add a little bit of cinnamon for extra flair.
Applesauce. Making applesauce is actually quite easy. Simply combine apples, water, and a little sugar in a saucepan and cook until the apples are soft. Mash them up, and you have easy, homemade applesauce.
Frosting. Have some extra frosting in the fridge? Use apple slices and dip in for a satisfying sweet treat.
Apple Dip. Any store-bought fruit dip will work or make your own using vanilla pudding.
Caramel Dipped Apples. These shouldn’t be reserved for the county fair. Caramel apples are actually quite easy to make at home, and the kids will have fun helping. Kits are available at your local grocery store.
Peanut Butter. Peanut butter and apples is a classic combination. But try dipping them in the peanut butter, and then drizzling them with honey or jelly or rolling them in mini chocolate chips.
Snack on Them
Peanut Butter Apple Rings. Another take on using peanut butter: Remove the apple core, slice the apple into slices, and then spread the rings with peanut butter. Add your other favorite toppers, like raisins or chocolate chips.
Apple Chips. Slice the apples as thin as possible and place them on a parchment paper-lined cookie sheet. Sprinkle with cinnamon-sugar if desired and bake for about 1 hour at 225°F. A healthy, easy treat!
Apple Toast. Spread peanut butter on bread and top with apple slices; sprinkle with cinnamon. Bake at 350°F for 10 to 15 minutes.
Apples and Cheese. They’re especially good with really sharp cheese, such as cheddar.
Play with Them
Place Settings. Throwing a fall party? Use an apple as a place setting. Make a thin slice across the top of the apple and insert the name tag. Easy and inexpensive!
Bobbing for Apples. Sure, it’s fun at a party, but bobbing for apples also makes for a great afternoon activity with adult supervision. Both kids and adults will want to participate!
Apple Votives. Use a paring knife to cut a circle out of the top of the apple. Insert a votive candle.
Apple Stamps. Remember making potato stamps as a kid? Make beautiful artwork by cutting apples in half, applying paint to the flesh, and stamping on paper.
